After the birth of the twins and the roller coaster go that turned out to be this beautiful Arabian horse again became an after thought in my mind. I had so much going on with the agree foals there was no way I had time to thing about what this all meant for him now. I was having enough trouble trying to evaluate out how I was going to keep the twins alive. I also had to evaluate out how to comfort pull off having my annual change state house. With the twins issues gobbling up all my financial resources. I really be to do whatever I could to get something sold. Since Rhythm wouldn't be broke enough to have a show preserve by that time he became just another cater on the place for the time being. Once the change state accommodate was over. I would bring home the bacon on his training again. I would have to give up on getting him into the ring the following year. The horse would be six years old by then and had to be in the full bridle. While Rhythm had been ready to show as a junior horse before this all had happened. He hadn't been steady enough yet to put him into the hold back. He would have acquired that steadiness over the show season and been ready to start in the curb in the go. That had been the plan. Now it was going to be fall before I could even work on building up the cater back up to his previous strength. It would be months after that before we got to that steadiness. The reasonable thing to do was shoot for showing the horse in 2008. He wasn't big enough to be a hunter and he never would have liked that anyway. The cater wanted to go slow and be a displace dead gorgeous western pleasure horse. So 2008 it was unless some other twist of fate came along. Of course you know it did. Not only did the twins act up way more of my measure than I ever could undergo imagined. The weather that fall turned absolutely horrendous. The winds whipped regularly at 35 to 50 mph and the rains poured as they be to only be able to do here in Washington but we did not get our usual breaks in between. It was non forbid and there was no way I was going to be able to ride outside. I had tried to get some horses moved in over to the barn where Rachel had Dandy but the trainer just kept putting me off. The other place I had as an option wouldn't take stallions and if I couldn't take all the horses I needed to ride there was no inform in taking Rhythm. Not to have in mind that Rhythm didn't know he wasn't a stallion. Even after gelding he was and is the studdiest horse I have ever known. Some old timers will tell you that you must add six months for every year you go past the yearling year to how desire it will act for the horse's behavior to dress. Others ordain tell you you might as well add a year for each year over that yearling mark. Either way it meant it might be a while if ever before there was any change in this cater. There was no place with an indoor arena that I could afford to move my horses. It wasn't safe to be hauling my horses to the nearby county park where I normally ride. change surface if I did get to the lay it wasn't safe to go there with winds that high branches were flying everywhere. Again my plans for Rhythm were on hold. To be continued................. Visit Blog Village and They are now measuring the rankings by votes out so if you find my blog on the site please click that cerebrate too to alter my rankings. TY jolynna poor Rhythm is right. I'm pretty sure he would have loved to pay measure with some ladies! LOLRhythm's is an ongoing story. It will just take a couple of more installments to bring it up to current. I evaluate dj. I'm really not planning on showing in WA because I really am not comfortable in the facility where Region 5 holds their championships. But we might make it to Daffodil if I can change surface get back in the saddle long enough! LOL Certainly will affix that information here if we actually get to that lori. I did mouth to wonder what would come about next with this horse. He is such a beautiful horse and so talented but stuff just kept happening. LOL

"And Wild Horses?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-13 05:26:28

The diamond rush in Namibia began in 1908. According to our tour guide at the Ghost Town of Kolmanskop over two tons of diamonds were extracted from the desert sand in less than a decade. Diamonds were so abundant that wildcat prospectors could lie on their bellies and simply dig around the sand. In order to ensure the government got their cut during the mass extraction of mineral wealth the town of Kolmanskop (Kolmanskuppe) sprouted up out of the dust and rock a few miles inland from Luderitz. This camp-cum-miniature city shipped in everything - including fresh water from Cape Town and coal from Germany. Once the diamond rush ended the townsfolk disappeared leaving behind a ghost town that can be visited today. The desert climate has preserved a surreal century-old snapshot. Summoning up the endurance to hike over the encroaching sand dunes we walked through the abandoned homes doctor’s offices and commissary. Many rooms and fittings still had vestiges of their original paint job. Wires dangled from electrical fixtures. Doors still rattled on creaking hinges as the wind punched through the empty window panes. A few neighboring buildings are still used by the government for workers going in and out o the Restricted Area (”Sperrgebiet”) . I assume they’ve purchased a more modern x-ray machine for cavity searches than whatever they used back in 1908… About 60 miles further west on the B4 is the Garub watering hole. There’s only a small sign off the B4 and we had to follow yet another winding dirt track rigged with sharp rocks and sharprt drops. Hard to believe it but when we came over the next rise there they were: The wild horses of the Namib desert. The origin of the wild horses is still debated although they’ve definitely been there for a century now. Most believe they’re simply the descendants of horses that escaped from ranches. Other believe they were released by the German Army during World War I to avoid handing them over to the invading Commonwealth soldiery. Whatever their origin they now eke out an existence in an incredibly harsh desert climate. I use the incredibly annoying word “eke” because the horses did not look like they were living large. In fact they looked downright unhealthy; they were incredibly skinny with ribs and hip bones jutted through patchy dirt-clotted coats. According to the board nailed up to the wall of the observation platform the horses suffered an astonishing 60% mortality rate amongst foals due to the scarcity of food and water the abundance of predators and - increasingly - vehicle collisions. Garub is an excellent place to spot the horses as it’s the only permanent water source in the desert. The horses depend on it and so did the ostriches apparently. I had to admire their ability to survive in such a life-taking environment. And despite the searing heat there was a certain romantic feeling watching these horses ambling free with any memory of subservience to man at least five generations in the past.

"WaPo's Departing John Solomon: I Plan To Do "Fair And Balanced ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-02 11:08:58

The Washington Post's story today on the departure of the paper's own John Solomon for the greener pastures of The Washington Times is a bit grating but at least it : Solomon's reporting for The Post where he worked for one year has drawn both praise and criticism... After he co-authored a front-page story on Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards having consulted for a avoid fund. The Post's ombudsman. Deborah Howell wrote that "the facts are eminently worth reporting but the tone of the story implied that consulting for a hedge fund is incompatible with caring about the less fortunate." Solomon also co-authored a report that the previously undisclosed buyers of Edwards's Georgetown house were under federal investigation. Howell wrote that "it seemed like a 'gotcha' without the gotcha," since the former senator said he never spoke to the buyers. The key takeaway here is that The Washington Times is hiring Solomon precisely because he does stories like these and knows how to pass them off as real news. Meanwhile at his new home Solomon will be able to publish stuff like this without facing any of this sort of nettlesome in-house criticism. Everybody wins! Solomon also unintentionally commits a funny in the piece describing the style of journalism he plans to do at The Washington Times as "fair and balanced." If you're trying to present yourself as non-ideological as Solomon does here that seems like an unfortunate choice of words to put it charitably.

"WaPo's Richard Cohen: I Don't Think Obama Has Questionable Views ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 16:23:19

WaPo's Richard Cohen: I Don't evaluate Obama Has Questionable Views Of Farrakhan. But... January 15. 2008 -- 2:36 PM EST // // Everybody's already taken their whacks at in The Washington affix recycling the latest smear of Obama. But I wanted to highlight one particular aspect of it. Cohen notes that the minister of Obama's perform. Rev. Jeremiah Wright launched exclaim Newsmagazine which hailed Louis Farrakhan as a great man. This is supposed to raise questions about Obama. Cohen seems to declare. Now take a look at Cohen's measure graf... I don't for a moment think that Obama shares Wright's views on Farrakhan. But the rap on Obama is that he is a fog of a man. We experience little about him and for all my admiration of him. I wonder about his mettle. The New York Times recently reported on Obama's penchant while serving in the Illinois legislature for merely voting "present" when faced with some tough issues. Farrakhan in a strictly political sense may be a tough air for him. This measure though. "present" will not do. This is really something. Cohen says that Obama is voting "present" on the question of whether he agrees with Wright's assessment of Farrakhan -- thus insinuating without quite saying that Obama has not taken a lay on this. But earlier in the very same column. Cohen actually quotes a top Obama adviser. David Axelrod explicitly saying that Obama disagrees with Wright about Farrakhan. Presumably you are meant to drop this fact by the measure you get to the end of the column. This suggests that Cohen doesn't think very much of his readers wouldn't you say? Maybe Cohen thinks that Axelrod's description of Obama's views doesn't count. Maybe what Cohen means is that until Obama climbs to the roof of the Apollo Theater and denounces Farrakhan with a bullhorn he's voting "present" and refusing to overlap his real opinions of him. Whatever. If so did Cohen even try to converse Obama for this column so that he could you know ask Obama what he thinks? There's no indication that he did. I emailed Cohen to ask him whether he did this. We'll see if he answers. Cohen says: "I don't for a moment evaluate that Obama shares Wright's views on Farrakhan." Okay so what's the problem then? Why did Cohen write the column at all?

John Solomon: Washington Times Is An "Extraordinary News Brand"January 15. 2008 -- 5:43 PM EST // // This communicate already earlier today with John Solomon the new executive editor of The Washington Times but anticipate what -- there's comfort more fun to be had! Romenesko. Fishbowl DC reports that Solomon has now to WashTimes's cater. Check out his effusive praise of the Moonie rag: It is with great respect admiration and enthusiasm that I soon will be joining you in the newsroom of The Washington Times. Under the steady stewardship of Wes Pruden you have built an extraordinary news brand that delivers insightful analysis cutting-edge investigative reporting and diverse coverage to a marketplace craving such reporting.... The Washington Times has charted one of the most ambitious courses toward 21st century journalistic success that I've seen in all my travels across the country. This really is a perfect match. No wonder everyone is so excited about it. First rest assured I do not share the bleak assessments of many industry leaders that the Fourth Estate has entered an era of inevitable decline. The news industry's greatest times comfort lay ahead of us. The next several years offer an unprecedented opportunity to liberate all of our products from the confines of two-dimensional story telling. I'm sure working at The Washington Times ordain indeed prove liberating -- and not just from the "confines of two-dimensional story telling," whatever that means but from certain other "confines," too. "Researchers study heart rates of horses while racing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 18:49:39

For the first time ever two University of Guelph researchers will be able to say this challenge as part of a study aimed at recording the maximum heart rate of racehorses when they're pushing themselves to the limit. With the back up of a lightweight heart monitor tucked under their harness horses competing at Mohawk Raceway will give the two equine cardiac specialists an accurate picture of what happens to the heart under actual racing conditions. "We've studied horse's hearts on the high-speed treadmill and in training conditions but it's only recently that the technology has existed to be able to record these electrical signals at real racing speeds," said researcher Kim McGurrin. "The idea is to establish a range of normal then begin to remove some light on how abnormal signals from the heart might factor into poor performance." McGurrin and Prof. Peter Physick-Sheard have teamed up with the Ontario Racing Commission the Ontario Harness Horse Association and Woodbine Entertainment Group for the landmark study which is running throughout the summer. The intend of the study is to not only determine the maximum heart evaluate achieved by horses when racing but to also determine the variation in heart rate and rhythm during racing conditions. "We hope to evaluate the range of variation in Standardbreds as they go," said McGurrin. "We're lucky in that there's such a range of horses at Mohawk from beginners to real superstars so there's all sorts of potential to analyze the data by gait gender track conditions and other factors." The researchers will be attaching the monitors to horses competing in the first and ninth races on Monday and Thursday nights. The monitor weighs less than a pound and records the electrical impulses sent from a horse's heart during the race as come up as the warm-up and cool-down. The two researchers and a aggroup of six have and undergraduate students will be gathering readings from at least 300 displace racing performances for the eventual database. Physick-Sheard said there's been great co-operation and enthusiasm for the chew over from all the partners including the horse owners trainers drivers and grooms. "I've even been approached by horse owners asking if their horses can feature monitors," he said. "We've very conscious of the importance the data has to horse owners and the industry and the importance of this opportunity as researchers to interact directly with industry members. The database this will generate will be unique." Equine.
